5 Ways To Be More Memorable!

So the other day I came home from an industry event with a stack of business cards.    As I sat down to make follow up notes I began to realize that I didn’t remember who half of the cards belonged to.
 
There were immediate people I remembered right away!   And then there were the others, not a clue.  It was like our meeting had been forever lost in time and pretty much worthless, no connection what so ever.
 
I thought … how do these people sell anything if no one can remember them.   And then I thought, how sad, to not be remembered.  Do they know they are not memorable?
 
It got me thinking … how will you be remembered?  Are the memories you create the same in business and in pleasure?  Do your friends see you the way as your business colleagues?  Does that matter to you?
 
It’s critical we think about and pay attention to this idea.  Whether it’s at a business event or a social event … how we are perceived and received is a key element in how we are remembered!
 
It’s also important to note that being memorable is different than shameless self-promotion which is always a major turn off.
 
Do you know that every where you go, every day, from now until the end of your life  … your creating memories, thoughts, dreams and feelings in others around you.
 
Being memorable is inevitable, it will either happen on your terms or not.   Are you who you want to be?
 
Here are some ways to help you make sure you are one of the MEMORABLE ones:
  1. Tell a Story – People relate to stories and experiences.  So tell a personal story, create an experience. Be real and be authentic.   And if you can be funny … total extra bonus!
  2. Be Present – Eye contact, listening, nodding and lots of SMILES!  Be there and let the person your talking to know it by showing it!  People want to know in life:  Do you see me?  Do you hear me?  Does what I say mean anything to you?  By being present – you will clearly let them know that the answer to all 3 questions is YES!
  3. Ask Questions – Try to listen 90% of the time and ask, ask, ask questions. Being a curious cat shows that your engaged and interested. Plus, it will make them feel important and appreciated.  How can you forget someone who makes you feel that way?!
  4. Be a Resource – Solve a problem! Find out what challenges they are having in business and find a way to help them.  This creates a connection and gives you insight into their business.  An absolute let up on the competition!
  5. Polish your Image – Your image is a big part of your brand.  Like it or not.  So be mindful how you present yourself. Be unique, be refreshing.  Smile, laugh and throw some of your awesome energy around the room!

    Well said, Judi!

    As silly as it sounds, having a memorable card can help too. Obviously we all have our own corporate business cards, but sometimes a personal card can make a big impression, too! My dear friend works at JellyVision- their cards are awesome, but not necessarily attention-grabbing. She opted to purchase and design some seriously heavy and cool cards, and she hands them out to only the people she REALLY wants to connect with. I’m pretty sure she used http://us.moo.com/. It’s a great conversation-starter, too!
