Essentialism Part 3: Why Trade-Offs Matter!

“Strategy is about making choices, trade-offs.  It’s about deliberately choosing to be different.” – Michael Porter

I’m back his week with Part 3 on my series exploring the game-changing book Essentialism by Greg McKeown.

Now, onto this weeks show … we are digging into choices and trade-offs.

If you are anything like I was, a MEGA NON-essentialist, then you have this feeling that everything is important and that not one thing you are doing can be lessened or taken off the stove and moved to the back burner.

It’s this kind of thinking that keeps so many of you from reaching your highest potential.

The author of the book Greg McKeown tells a story in the book about Southwest Airlines and the founder, Herb Kelleher, (who is a major Essentialist btw!) was once interviewed on his business strategy and he started talking about the trade offs he made when structuring the biz of southwest airlines.

Things like …

  • Rather than fly to every destination, they chose to fly only point-to-point flights.
  • Rather than jack up prices to cover cost of meals, they serve none.
  • Rather than assigning seats in advance, they let the people choose them.
  • Rather than selling first class service, they offer only coach.

These tradeoffs were not made by defat, but by design!

They were on purpose!

Herb said in the interview “You have to look at every opportunity and say, “well, no … I’m sorry.  We’re not going to do a thousand different things that really don’t contribute much to the end result we are trying to achieve.”

As you strive to do “less but better” in your own life you will have to make trade offs.

The Questions is … how do you do it and still thrive?

And that’s what we are digging into in this week’s video … click the vid below to watch this week’s episode:
