The work I do requires me to travel for a living.
Therefore, I spend a lot of time in hotels, ubers, planes, taxis, airports, shuttles, trains, and highway rest stops.
Being a road warrior is not for the faint of heart and definitely not as glamorous as it seems.
There are delays, and cancellations, and grumpy travelers, and crappy airport food, and middle seats, and turbulence, and germs.
Yet, I wouldn’t trade it for the world … it’s really not all bad.
There are amazing things … like …Seeing the world, being reminded that above the clouds the sun is always shining, the miracle of flight, the whitespace you get while being disconnected in the air, meeting new people.
I’ve found that in all my traveling there are a few key things I can do to make the non-glamourous situations better.
Here is a sneak peek into my travel bag so you can see the essentials I use to make life easier on the road:
1. First up … let’s talk about The Bag. I travel with the cutest ever Marc Jacobs Backpack. It’s not only super chic, but it allows me to be hands free and keep all my items safely on me. Take a little spin around Amazon, there are tons of cute backpack options out there. Plus, the lower back pain (I sound so old saying this but it’s legit) that I got from carrying a huge heavy purse on one shoulder was bad. This has helped relieve that!
2. iPhone Bandolier Case – This goes hand in hand with my backpack. It allows me to be hands free AND never worry about losing my iPhone as it’s safely secured to my body. I slip my credit cards and ID in the back pocket so all the important stuff is securely. You can also buy THIS pouch attachment to give it more space if needed.
3. Essential Oils – I am a big DoTerra fan and never leave the house without InTune (for Focus), DigestZen (to soothe the stomach), and Peppermint (to keep me alert). A little oil on a long flight can work miracles. I also love Breathe at night to diffuse in my room and Eucalyptus if I’m feeling stuffy.
4. Headphones – I am obsessed with my Bose noise cancelling headphones. The acoustics are insane and it blocks out most of the airplane background noise including crying babies and loud talkers. Plus, they are super comfy on the ear.
5. A book and highlighter – I always have the latest book I’m reading with me and of course a highlighter to take good notes. If you have trouble fitting in your reading … this is the perfect opportunity.
6. Gum, Advil, and other apothecaries – I always have a little bag of odds and ends in case I need something on the fly.
7. A Notebook and Pen – I do a lot of “white spacing” on plane rides, so this keeps all my ideas in one place.
8. A BPA free water bottle – This allows me to stay hydrated on the fly and skip buying the $8 bottles of water at the airport. Most airports now have the filtered water fill stations.
9. Snacks and Mushroom Coffee – I always have good coffee on me so I’m never stuck without it or with a bad cup of Joe. (I also bring my own Stevia so I have the good sugar when I need it) Don’t let the “mushroom” part of this coffee scare you. It’s regular coffee yet has some mushroom herbs in it to amp up the healthy benefits. This coffee is insane! I also always travel with healthy food options on me like jerky, nuts, and KIND bars. That way I’m not stuck eating bad airport food.
10. Organic Wet Wipes – I use the Honest Company Wet Wipes in a travel pack. This way I can always wipe down my hands, remotes, airport tray, etc. So many nasty germs
The bottom line is this: Travel does not have to get you off your routine.
You can stay healthy on the road and travel better.
It just takes a little bit of preparation.
