How reading can change your life and 5 ways to get better at it!

“Not all readers are leaders, but all leaders are readers.” – Harry S. Truman

When I began this journey of blogging and writing on leadership … I spent a lot of time reading and researching.   I would read about blogging, about building a website, about leadership, about Improv, about life, about entrepreneurs, about taking risks, about speaking.

I was like a junkie.  Literally “jonseing” for my next fix.  Anything I could get my hands on that was relevant to my passion.

It was, and is, fuel to my soul.

And it also became very apparent that leadership, success and inspiration were all a direct relative to books and authors and WORDS!

Some of the books I have been reading have not only changed the way I do business, but they have changed the way I do life!!!!

It got me thinking?  I need to start sharing these book concepts with my readers.  Stat!

So I plan to do that … one book a time. Taking the key concepts from each book and sharing with you what I took a way that was a game changer.

Trust me … it’s going to be FUN!  The authors I’m reading are SO insanely smart and motivating.   They have concepts that can change your life.  That can get you more business. That can help you turn up the volume in your relationships.

The things I will share will help you become more AWESOME than you already are.

I can’t wait to get started!

But first … reading can sound overwhelming b/c your so busy at work and at life.  But I’m telling you it’s critical!

First let’s talk about how to get better at it and how to retain more information:
  1. Multi-Task: Honestly!  This time it’s ok. I read when I run, when I make long drives, when I ride the train, before bed, on planes.  So I challenge you … instead of zoning out on Facebook or wasting away on Pintrest … read a book, learn something, grow your mind!
  2. It’s ok if you don’t finish:  Seriously!  Sometimes skimming a book and highlighting and noting the KEY concepts is enough.  Don’t beat yourself up … the way we read looks different for everyone.
  3. Get out that highlighter:   I am obsessed with my hot pink highlighter!  It goes everywhere with me, ready to show some love to an amazing concept or quote I MUST retain and share.
  4. Talk about it:  If you read something amazing or a concept inspires you … talk about it!   First of all your helping someone, which is amazing. Plus, it makes you look super smart and gives you major “street-cred” when you can book drop and author drop while talking to a client, a boss, a colleague.
  5. Share the love:  Give it away!  I can’t think of a more personal and thoughtful gift than a really awesome book with a note inscribed.  So if you read something amazing and think of someone, pass it on.   Pay it forward.  Inspire someone!
I can’t wait to get started … in the meantime …

What book have you read lately that’s inspired you?

Be well. Be Inspired!
